Kani will not go home for Diwali; order reserved till Nov 3

The special CBI Court has reserved its order on DMK MP Kanimozhi's bail plea. This means that she will have to remain in Tihar till Nov 3rd. The order has been reserved for 6 others accused in the 2G spectrum case including Sharad Kumar, Asif Balwa, Rajiv Agarwal and Karim Morani.

The CBI had earlier stated that it will not oppose the bail plea of Kanimozhi and 4 others who were accused in the case.

RK Chandolia and Shahid Balwa's bail plea will however be heard on Oct 31st. The CBI had opposed the bail plea of the duo.

The matter will be a big setback for DMK Chief Karunanidhi who was stationed in New Delhi till the time Kanimozhi secures bail. He had lobbied hard by meeting Sonia Gandhi and PM Manmohan Singh ahead of the bail plea hearing.

2G: Chidambaram should resign or PM must drop him, says Jayalathithaa

Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa on Thursday demanded that home minister P Chidambaram resign in the wake of the finance ministry's note on the 2G spectrum issue or Prime Minister Manmohan Singh drop him from the Cabinet.

"It is quite clear that Mr Chidambaram is deeply involved in the 2G spectrum scam, which according to the CAG's report has caused a loss of over Rs 1.76 lakh crore to the Indian exchequer," she said when asked about the finance ministry's note to the PMO that Chidambaram, the then finance minister, could have insisted on the spectrum auction.

She said Chidambaram should immediately resign from his post or else the Prime Minister should drop him from the Cabinet.

"The CBI should proceed against Chidambaram, as they did against A Raja...", Jayalalithaa said.

The AIADMK supremo, however, refused to comment on DMK's claim that the note could help former telecom minister A Raja and DMK MP Kanimozhi, now in jail on the issue.

"I would not like to comment on that. I will stop with whatever I have said," she said.

In a document submitted before the Supreme Court on Wednesday, the finance ministry had said the telecom ministry could have gone in for auction of 2G spectrum licenses had the then finance minister P Chidambaram insisted on this.

Raja has been vindicated, says DMK after 2G spectrum note

Against the backdrop of the finance ministry note on 2G spectrum pricing, DMK, a key UPA ally, on Thursday maintained that the stand taken by jailed former telecom minister A Raja on the issue has been 'vindicated'.

"The crux of the entire case is that Raja violated all advice by the Prime Minister and finance ministry. The letter (by finance ministry) says that the then finance minister had agreed to the fixed price, non-auction rule. This vindicates Raja's stand," top DMK sources said.

In a document submitted before the Supreme Court on Wednesday, finance ministry had said that the telecom cinistry could have gone in for auction of 2G spectrum licenses had the then finance minister P Chidambaram insisted on this.

Raja, who quit as telecom minister last year in the wake of CAG findings on losses caused to the exchequer over non-auction of spectrum, had told a court that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Chidambaram had been kept in the loop.

The March 25, 2011 office memorandum by the finance ministry sent to the Prime Minister's Office also suggested that Chidambaram and Raja had jointly determined the price for the 2G spectrum in 2008.

The document was filed in the apex court by Janata party leader Subramanian Swamy, who has sought probe against Chidambaram for his alleged culpability in the price fixation of the spectrum, contending that CBI was only holding Raja for the loss of revenue to the exchequer in the spectrum allocation.

2G case: Kanimozhi to remain in jail till May 30 as HC issues notice to CBI

The Delhi high court on Tuesday issued notice to the CBI on the bail pleas of DMK MP Kanimozhi and Kalaignar TV MD Sharad Kumar in the 2G spectrum case.

"Issue notice to the CBI for May 30," Justice Ajit Bharihoke, who on Monday dismissed the bail pleas of five corporate honchos in the case, said.

The court also asked the probe agency to file a status report detailing the stage of investigation and the judicial proceedings in the case on the next date of hearing.

Kanimozhi, the 43-year-old daughter of DMK Supremo M Karunanidhi, and Sharad Kumar had approached the high court on Monday with their bail applications after the special CBI court order their "forthwith" arrest on May 20.

Rejecting their bail applications, the special court had said that the offence attributed to them was grave and the possibility of influencing the witnesses cannot be ruled out.

Karunanidhi in Delhi, to meet daughter Kanimozhi in jail today

DMK Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi will have a special visitor at Tihar Jail, where she has been lodged since Friday.

Her 87-year-old father, DMK chief M Karunanidhi, is in Delhi to meet his youngest child. He is expected to meet Kanimozhi at Tihar Jail, in the Superintendent's office, at around 5 pm today.

Karunanidhi's older son and Union minister MK Alagiri will accompany him to Delhi. His younger son, MK Stalin, is also likely to reach Delhi in the evening.

Kanimozhi, meanwhile, moved the Delhi High Court today for bail in the 2G case.

She was arrested on Friday after her bail plea was dismissed by a special Delhi court. She has been named a co-accused in the 2G case by the CBI. She will be brought to court on Monday for the daily hearing in the case.

After being arrested on Friday and spending her first night in jail, a stoic Kanimozhi had appeared in court on Saturday morning along with others accused in the case. She managed a smile as she met her husband and greeted party workers waiting outside the court for her. Her mother, Rajathi Ammal, however, had broken down. Surrounded by many party workers, the two then sat together in the court, holding hands.

"I'm ok. Have to now deal with whatever comes my way," Kanimozhi told NDTV in court on Saturday.

Kanimozhi has been chargesheeted by the CBI for allegedly conspiring with former Telecom Minister A Raja and accepting a Rs. 214-crore bribe via Kalaignar TV. Raja, a DMK MP and a Dalit leader, has been in Tihar Jail since February for allegedly planning and executing the 2G scam when he was Telecom Minister in 2008. A company that he favoured allegedly sent him the massive bribe.

The bail plea of Kalaignar TV Managing Director Sharath Kumar was also rejected by Special CBI Judge OP Saini on Friday. He too was taken to jail. Kanimozhi and Kumar hold 20 per cent stake each in Kalaignar TV, while former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi's wife and Kanimozhi's step mother Dayalu Ammal holds 60 per cent share.

Justice Saini said bail had been dismissed due to the magnitude of the crime and given the seriousness of the allegations, he was unable to show any consideration to her being a woman. Kanimozhi's lawyer had argued that she should be given reprieve on the grounds that she was a woman and mother to a young child. Bail has not been granted to any of the accused in the case.

Kanimozhi is lodged in jail number 6 (women's cell) and ward number 8 in Tihar Jail. Her new neighbours include Madhuri Gupta - a former Indian diplomat charged with spying for Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and Sharda Jain, a murder accused.

A Ganesh Nadar analyses the 12 reasons that made the DMK bite the dust in state elections

Karunanidhi was out-freebied by Jayalalithaa

1) Many people attributed the Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam's win in the 2006 assembly elections to its lucrative promise of free TV sets for every household. After coming to power, the party spent Rs 4,000 crore from the public exchequer to distribute the TV sets. They also introduced an innovative medi-claim card to provide insurance for poor families.

In spite of these and other pro-poor schemes, the DMK not only lost the assembly elections this year, but lost very badly.

DMK's arch rival All India Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam chief J Jayalalithaa took off some of the shine of their freebie freefall by announcing several schemes of her own.

Now that the AIADMK has come to power, the people of Tamil Nadu will get free grinders, mixers and fans. Families living below the poverty line well get free rice and mineral water. They have even been promised free gold when their daughters get married.

2)2G scam was an issue in the countryside too

The 2G scam, implicating DMK leaders A Raja and Kanimozhi, peaked at the right time, as the state went into election mode. There were allegations that a huge amount was paid by a grandson in the family to his grandmother for a Cabinet post.

The Neera Radia tapes had already caused considerable damage to the DMK's first family. The tapes also exposed the hectic lobbying that had taken place to make Raja the telecom minister. Those who had lobbied for him were now in the dock in a scam which was worth a whopping Rs 176 lakh crore.

Though the 2G scam made waves in urban India, DMK leaders naively thought that it would not have much impact in rural areas. They were wrong.

Rural Tamil Nadu may not have been aware of the intricacies of the 2G scam but they were definitely aware of its magnitude.

The people in rural pockets felt that the ruling party had taken them for a ride while its leaders made enormous amounts of money for themselves. They were not sure how the money had been made but they knew a lot of it had been siphoned off.

At the grass root level, DMK functionaries did not defend the 2G accused. They chose to laugh at the accusations. One DMK councillor in Nagaipattinam was telling the people, "They are accusing us of selling air waves. How can you sell air?"

He thought he was being funny. But the people saw no humour in these utterances; instead they sensed brazen corruption. And they decided to teach the DMK a lesson.

DMK supremo Karunanidhi's daughter Kanimozhi being named a co-conspirator along with Raja, who is already behind bars, did not help the DMK's cause either.

The money trail in the 2G scam led straight to Kalaignar TV where the first family owns 80 per cent of the shares. Then chief minister Karunandhi's wife Dayalu Ammal owned 60 per cent of the shares and daughter Kanimozhi owned 20 per cent.

People did not need further proof of the DMK's corrupt dealings, though Kalaignar TV has claimed that the Rs 214 crore it received from DB Realty was a loan which the network has since returned.

3) Voters didn't buy DMK's logic for inflation

Inflation was another major cause behind the DMK's electoral reverses. Instead of taking steps to control prices, the state government tried to dodge the blame by pointing out that prices were going up all over the country. Such logic would not have mattered to the voters of Tamil Nadu who were unable to purchase even basic food items due to soaring prices.

4) Fluctuating bus fares were another reason for the DMK's loss. For the same distance travelled in a bus, the commuter sometimes paid double and even triple the regular fare. The state road transport corporation classified certain buses as 'limited stop services' and tagged it with other nomenclatures. This meant hiked fares but not additional comforts.

5) State govt didn't do enough for Lankan Tamils

Frequent cases of firing by the Lankan Navy on Indian fishermen also dented the DMK's popularity in coastal Tamil Nadu. These fishermen would either be attacked or their catch seized by the Lankan Navy.

Though fishermen did stray into Lankan waters for a better catch, they felt that the DMK did not do enough to protect them from the neighbouring nation's navy.

6) Another factor against the DMK government was the skyrocketing price of river sand that is used for construction. As a result, there was rampant sand smuggling and the people blamed the ruling party for it.

7) Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam chief Prabhakaran was killed by the Lankan Army barely days after the Lok Sabha polls in 2009. Some political experts in Tamil Nadu felt that the rebel leader's killing was planned to take place after the polls.

Many believe that the DMK government did not do its best to protect innocent Lankan Tamils who were trapped between the army and the LTTE in the last stages of the civil war. They feel that had the DMK been more proactive, a lot of innocent lives could have been saved.

As one disgusted voter put it, "Writing letters to the prime minister does not help in such situations."

8. Congress, DMK's bitter seat-sharing

Another important reason for the DMK's loss was the lack of unity within the ruling family. Karunanaidhi's son and Union minister M K Azhagiri was openly challenging his younger brother and father's heir apparent Stalin.

Though nobody in the party admitted that the two brothers were pulling in opposite directions, the infighting didn't exactly boost the cadre's morale before the elections.

9) During seat-sharing talks, ally Congress bullied the DMK into parting with 15 more seats. Before the 2006 assembly polls, the Congress had been given 48 seats but this time they got 63 seats. This did not go down well with DMK cadres who always thought of the Congress as a junior party in the alliance.

DMK members did not bother to work hard in the constituencies the Congress contested from. And irrespective of their tall claims, the Congress simply doesn't have enough workers of its own in every village in Tamil Nadu.

In Bihar, the Congress had contested the recently held assembly polls on its own and won four seats. In Tamil Nadu, in spite of the combined strength of all its allies, the party managed to win only five seats. In a quid pro quo, Congress members didn't work hard or campaign much in seats that the DMK contested because of the bitter seat-sharing exercise.

10) Tirade against Vijayakanth backfired

In the Lok Sabha elections in 2009, the Vijayakanth led Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam had secured 10 per cent of the votes across Tamil Nadu. If this was added to the votes won by the AIADMK, the coalition would have easily won.

Keeping this in mind, Jayalalithaaa ensured an alliance with the DMDK this time, in spite of initial hiccups in the seat-sharing talks. She even agreed to give them 41 seats.

The AIADMK chief's strategic move paid off. The DMDK won 29 seats and the AIADMK won 150 seats (inclusive of the two seats won by Sharat Kumar's Akila India Samathuva Makkal Katchi). The DMDK managed to win more seats than the ruling DMK and pushed the party to the third place. Worse for the DMK, Vijayakanth will be the new leader of the opposition in the assembly.

The DMK had recruited popular Tamil comedian Vadivelu to counter Vijayakanth, who toured the entire state and attracted huge crowds wherever he went. He had a one-point agenda: attacking Vijayakanth.

He called Vijayakanth a drunkard and declared that he was unfit to be a 'captain'. Vijayakanth is fondly known as captain among his supporters after he essayed the role of Captain Prabhakaran in a film. Vadivelu's tirade against Vijayakanth has obviously backfired and next time, we are sure Vadivelu will only stick to acting.

11) No solution for power cuts

Another reason behind the DMK's debacle were the persistent power cuts. Though Tamil Nadu has always grappled with power shortage, the frequency of power cuts went through the roof right before the elections. Along with pre-scheduled power cuts for three hours, unscheduled power cuts lasting between 30 minutes and an hour became the norm.

Instead of taking steps to counter the power crisis, the DMK government blamed the previous AIADMK government's regime for the electricity shortage. People laughed at this excuse.

Incidentally, in spite of the party doing very badly in the state elections, DMK chief M Karunanidhi performed extremely well and won his seat with a whopping margin of over 50,000 votes. But the same cannot be said about his son and former deputy chief minister MK Stalin, who managed to hold onto his seat by a little over 2,000 votes.

Stalin can hardly call this a victory.

12) First family was taking over Kollywood

Films play a major role in Tamil Nadu politics. People soon realised that the state's first family was controlling Kollywood as well.

The family-owned Sun Pictures was releasing films regularly while three of Karunanidhi's grandsons produced movies as well. The people felt that others were not being given a chance in the film industry.

Many actors openly complained that they were being forced to attend political functions against their will. This did not go down well with the people of Tamil Nadu, who love their stars with a passion that the rest of the country will not understand.

The DMK has a tough three years ahead of it, before heading into the next Lok Sabha elections in 2014. They first have to deal with the 2G trial and then get their act together to present a united front to the people.

Stalin will have to use all the skills that his father has taught him over four decades and only then will the sun (the DMK's party symbol) continue to rise.

2G scam: Kanimozhi's bail decision reserved till May 14

A special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court on Saturday reserved for a week its decision on the bail plea by DMK MP Kanimozhi, named a co-conspirator in the 2G spectrum allocation case.

Special CBI judge OP Saini said the case will be taken up on May 14.

Earlier on Saturday, the CBI prosecutor said the DMK MP was the "active brain" associated with co-accused A Raja in the second generation (2G) spectrum allotment issue.

"It is totally false that she was not at all aware of the transfer of Rs 200 crore to Kalaignar TV, because she was the director at that time. Kanimozhi is the active brain behind the entire episode of the 2G spectrum scam," CBI prosecutor UU Lalit said to Special CBI judge OP Saini.

"It was later that she resigned from Kalignar TV as she was also the MP. Sharad Kumar took over at that time," Lalit said.

The CBI had on Friday stated the link between former communications minister A Raja and Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi's daughter Kanimozhi in the scam.

"It is totally baseless to say that Kanimozhi was not associated to Raja. She has fully participated along with Raja from the beginning till the end of the second generation spectrum allocation," Lalit had argued.

Senior lawyer Ram Jethmalani, arguing for Kanimozhi, had stated Kanimozhi's dissociation with Raja, who is in jail for his alleged role in the case.

"Even if we assume that Raja got transferred the Rs.200 crore bribe money from Dynamix Group to Kalaignar TV, no guilt is proved against me as I did not sign any document on behalf of the recipient TV channel," Jethmalani argued for Kanimozhi, who has a stake in Kalaignar TV.

The CBI had alleged in its chargesheet that Kanimozhi had actively pursued with intermediaries and her party the reappointment of Raja as communications minister.

Kanimozhi had earlier applied for bail on Friday.

DMK, Congress formalise poll pact

A day after breaking the deadlock, the DMK and the Congress today formalised their seat-sharing pact for the April 13 assembly polls, under which the national party will contest 63 seats.

DMK chief M Karunanidhi and Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president K V Thangkabalu signed the agreement, hammered out after hard bargaining by both sides for about a fortnight.

"Following discussions, it has been decided to share 63 seats with Congress," the copy of the agreement released to the media said.

Later, Thangkabalu described the DMK-Congress combine as a "winning alliance."

The seat-sharing talks had run into rough weather with DMK refusing to allot 63 seats and Congress dead set on its demand, which had brought the seven-year-old alliance under serious strain.

The stalemate continued till Tuesday when DMK finally relented to Congress' demand for 63 seats.

The DMK and the Congress had contested the 2004 and 2009 Lok Sabha polls from the same platform besides the 2006 Assembly elections.

DMK-Congress: Is 61 the magic number?

The Congress and DMK are expected to decide today whether they will stick together for the Tamil Nadu elections or split up over how many seats the Congress should be allowed to contest. Sources in Chennai say both sides have agreed on 61.

It's been a hectic morning for both parties. After a meeting with Sonia Gandhi last night in Delhi, senior DMK leaders briefed their chief, M Karunanidhi, who is likely to give his feedback on the negotiations in the next few hours. In a sign that the marriage may be saved, Mr Karunanidhi's daughter, Kanimozhi, is heading to Delhi from Chennai.

The DMK had initially drawn the line at 60 seats for the Congress, which said nothing less than 63 was acceptable. The Congress also said it wanted to participate in the government if the alliance wins the election (in the current arrangement, the DMK is in power with support from the Congress). Both sides have this morning reportedly agreed to bridge the gap at 61 seats.

The bluster has been high-volume since Saturday night, when the DMK announced that it was dropping out of the UPA coalition at the Centre over the battle with the Congress in Tamil Nadu. The DMK has 18 MPs and six ministers in the Centre, which give the party considerable clout. So after its ultimatum, the DMK waited for the Congress to coax and cajole it to change its mind - that never happened. Yesterday, DMK leaders like Mr Karunanidhi's son, MK Alagiri, who is a union minister, said all six ministers of the DMK would hand in their resignations to the PM.

Congress leader Pranab Mukherjee then staged an intervention last afternoon, meeting Mr Karunanidhi's nephew, Dayanidhi Maran. By the evening, the DMK ministers recalled the decision to resign, stating that the Congress had asked for another day. Last night, Mr Maran and Mr Alagiri met Sonia Gandhi, but sources say the talks ended without a break-through. This morning, the DMK chief was briefed on those talks and he said he would hold a new round of discussions with senior DMK leaders in Chennai.

Divorce over 2G scam?

While the Congress and the DMK argue publicly over seats, sources say the real cause for the break-up is the DMK's entanglement with the 2G spectrum scam. One of the DMKs main men, A Raja, who was Telecom Minister, has been arrested for siring the scam, which saw valuable frequency being given at throwaway prices to private companies. A Rs. 214-crore kickback from the scam was allegedly routed to a TV station in Chennai that's owned largely by Mr Karunanidhi's wife, and his daughter Kanimozhi, who is an MP and a close associate of Mr Raja's. The CBI, in charge of investigating the scam, has raided the homes and offices of people closely associated with Kanimozhi, and she is expected to be questioned in the next few weeks by the CBI. The DMK is getting increasingly uncomfortable with the inquiry and what it might throw up. The Congress, on the other hand, is suggested to be wary of asking for votes with a political partner whose senior members seem tarnished by corruption.

Jayalalithaa denies links to Hasan Ali Khan

AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa today issued legal notices to three media organisations, including DMK-owned 'Kalaignar TV', for carrying "frivolous and defamatory" reports linking her to tainted Pune based businessman Hasan Ali Khan, and demanded unconditional apology from them.

The notices have been issued to Mumbai-based eveninger 'Mid-Day', Chennai-based DMK's official mouthpiece 'Murasoli' and 'Kalaignar TV'.

Jayalalithaa said she will take legal action if the three media organisations failed to respond to her notice.

Jayalalithaa's counsel P H Manoj Pandian said in the notice that the "preposterous claim made without any verification is not backed by any documentation."

"My client states that the report by Mid-Day quotes an anonymous investigating officer as saying that investigations into huge cache of money in the possession of Hasan Ali Khan, who is at the center of a controversy for reportedly evading Income Tax to the tune of several thousand crores, pointed to 'a woman politician, who was also Chief Minister of a state from South India. This is mischievous, scurrilous, malicious and insinuating journalism at its very worst," he said.

Pandian said Jayalalithaa categorically makes known that she has nothing whatsoever to do with Hasan Ali and said it was she who had issued statements and pressed for action against persons who have stashed black money in foreign banks.

Khan is accused of stashing black money abroad.

He said the Mid-Day report became the source for Murasoli and Kalaignar TV which identified the "woman Chief Minister" as Jayalalithaa in a highly "defammtory, slanderous report" in the Tamil daily which was also broadcast in Kalaignar TV.

The report was conceived through "sheer imagination" and published without any verification and with ulterior motive, he said in the notice.

"My client states that the above referred news item does not contain an iota of truth. The news item is false, frivolous and defamatory with the intention of maligning my client in order to cause loss of reputation to her and the party she leads," he said.

Saying that Jayalalithaa had suffered loss due to the report that cannot be quantified, Pandian said the dailies should tender unconditional apology and publish it in the first page, while Kalaignar TV has to broadcast the same.

"It has to be done immediately on receipt of this notice by all of you, failing which my client would be constrained to institute necessary and appropriate civil and criminal action against you, jointly and severally to restrain you from indulging in such reckless, frivolous and irresponsible allegations and publishing the same, apart from claiming damages for the loss of reputation," he said.

Re-think your resignations, Pranab urges DMK

The Congress has asked the DMK to think one last time about its decision to quit the government. The DMK says its chief, M Karunanidhi, will review that offer.

So can this marriage be saved?

The political equivalent of a couples counselling session was held in Delhi this afternoon with Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee meeting with the senior DMK leader Dayanidhi Maran. Also present: The Congress' Ghulam Nabi Azad who is in charge of Tamil Nadu.

Earlier this morning, the parties seemed headed for divorce court with the DMK's ministers arriving in Delhi to submit their resignations to the Prime Minister.

Mr Mukherjee sent a sort of "Are you really sure?" message to the DMK. On record, the DMK bristled. TR Baalu said Mr Mukherjee's message had been passed on to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi. "As of now, there is no reconsideration by the DMK," he said. When asked if the split was likely to be reverse engineered, he said, "I am not a fortune teller."

But the meeting with Mr Mukherjee suggested a reconciliation is what both parties want, despite the bluster.

The DMK has six ministers and 18 MPs, allowing it to be an influential member of the coalition government at the Centre.

What has turned the allies into foes is the negotiation over what sort of role the Congress will play - first in the Tamil Nadu elections, and then in the government if the DMK comes to power. Currently, the DMK government is supported "from outside" by the Congress - the latter is not part of the government. Elections in Tamil Nadu are scheduled for April 13. The Congress wants 63 seats, as opposed to the 60 that the DMK is prepared to part with. Also, the Congress has shortlisted some constituencies which have to be included in its share. That's not acceptable to the DMK.

So the regional party insists its six ministers will meet the Prime Minister today to formalise the divorce with their resignations. (Read: What upset the DMK)

The split was first announced by the DMK on Saturday which apparently expected the Congress to respond with some serious TLC. The Congress instead chose to keep its distance, possibly emboldened by the fact that the Samajwadi Party has indicated it could replace the DMK in the coalition. On Sunday, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav claimed the UPA government will not fall - with his 22 MPs, that's not an empty promise.

In the 543-seat Lok Sabha, the half-way mark is 272. The Congress has 207 seats. Allies like the DMK push the UPA's tally to 274 - just two more than that critical half-way mark.

The DMK's 18 seats push the government into a minority. But Mulayam's 22 compensate nicely.

Divorce over 2G scam?

While the Congress and the DMK argue publicly over seats, sources say the real cause for the break-up is the DMK's entanglement with the 2G spectrum scam. One of the DMKs main men, A Raja, who was Telecom Minister has been arrested for siring the scam, which saw valuable frequency being given at throwaway prices to private companies. DMK-Cong alliance to collapse?

The seven-year-old DMK-Congress alliance was on the brink of collapse on the issue of seat-sharing for the Assembly polls tonight with party chief M Karunanidhi saying the party's high level committee would take a 'proper decision' on the issue tomorrow.

In a statement here, he asked whether it was proper for Congress, which had agreed for 60 seats earlier, to now demand 63 seats over telephone.

The Congress stand that it would decide on the constituencies to be contested was highly improper, he said in a statement.

The DMK and the Congress have held three rounds of discussions on seat-sharing for the April 13 Assembly elections, but no headway could be made due to differences between the two parties.
Speculation was rife that the deal would be signed today.

DMK upset with Congress' growing demand

The Congress-DMK seat sharing talks plunged into a crisis on Friday night after the DMK expressed displeasure over the constantly rising demands of the Congress.

“After having agreed to 60 seats, is it proper on the part of the Congress to demand 63 seats now and, on top of that, say that it would contest the elections in the constituencies of its choice?,” DMK president M. Karunanidhi asked in a statement issued past midnight.

Upset with the Congress stand, he said an appropriate decision would be taken on Saturday by the DMK's high-level action committee.

Mr. Karunanidhi said that going by the presence of several parties, the DMK was initially ready to offer 51 seats. As the talks progressed, the demand went up to 53, 55, 58 and, ultimately, it was finalised at 60 in the presence of AICC leader Ghulam Nabi Azad. “He said he would apprise the high command and confirm the final number. However, not only did he not turn up for signing the deal, but also demanded 63 seats tonight over telephone, and that the Congress itself would choose all its constituencies,” he said.

DMDK gets 41 seats in poll pact with AIADMK

The Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) led by actor Vijayakant will contest 41 seats as part of the AIADMK alliance in the Assembly elections on April 13.

The number of seats allotted to the DMDK was finalised after a meeting between AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa and DMDK president Vijayakant at the former's Poes Garden residence on Friday night.

While Mr. Vijayakant, who was accompanied his party presidium chairman Panruti S. Ramachandran and youth wing secretary L. K. Sudheesh, left without speaking to the media, a brief statement from Ms. Jayalalithaa's residence disclosed the seat-sharing agreement.

“The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam entered into a seat-sharing agreement with the DMDK and the party has been allotted 41 seats,” the statement said.

Mr. Vijayakant, who came to Ms. Jayalalithaa's residence around 9.25 p.m, had a nearly half-an-hour meeting with her.

The Left parties and Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), the other major parties in the AIADMK front, are likely to be invited for seat-sharing talks in the next few days.

Left leaders said they were told that a pact would be sealed with them on Friday, but it did not materialise as negotiations with DMDK could be completed only in the evening.

This is the first time that the DMDK, set up in 2005 by the veteran Tamil actor, is entering into an electoral alliance. Contesting alone, the party had polled a little over eight per cent in the 2006 Assembly elections and over 10 per cent in the 2009 Lok Sabha polls.

Congress-DMK talks remain inconclusive

A high-level round of intense negotiations failed to break the deadlock in seat-sharing talks between the Congress and DMK on Wednesday night. While the Congress, which began with the demand for 65 seats, is willing to settle for 62, the DMK does not want to go beyond 55 seats, sources said.

Ghulam Nabi Azad, AICC leader in charge of party affairs in Tamil Nadu, flew down to hold parleys with DMK president M Karunanidhi at the DMK headquarters, but the session was inconclusive. “The talks will continue tomorrow,” Mr. Karunanidhi told reporters late in the night.

Mr. Azad, who was expected to seal a pact as the emissary of Congress president Sonia Gandhi, left after more than two hours of discussions with the DMK president.

Earlier rounds of negotiations between a five-member Congress panel and the DMK's election committee failed to make much progress on seat-sharing.

The parties are also discussing the question of sharing power.

After Mr. Azad left, the Kongunadu Munnetra Kazhagam (KMK) was allotted seven seats in the DMK-led alliance.

TN parties in the process of striking alliances

Battle lines are being drawn for the Assembly polls due in April-May in Tamil Nadu with major political parties firming up or in the process of striking alliances.

While the ruling DMK had already had two rounds of talks with its key ally and UPA coalition leader Congress, it had netted the PMK, Indian Union Muslim League and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi into its basket.

The Opposition AIADMK had already launched talks with DMDK, floated by actor Vijayakant, MDMK and the Left parties besides allotting seats to minor parties like Puthiya Tamizhagam, Manithaneya Makkal Katchi, Republican Party of India and All India Forward Block.

The AIADMK's efforts for a rainbow alliance had succeeded with the DMDK joining it.

The BJP is waging a lone battle for the second time as neither of the two major Dravidian parties had entertained it.

The alliances had undergone a sea change from the one formed during the 2006 Assembly polls. While the DMK-Congress alliance and the AIADMK-MDMK tie-up remained intact, the Left parties have changed sides from DMK camp to AIADMK side since the 2009 Lok Sabha polls.

The PMK, known for shifting its loyalties, had done it once again by shifting from AIADMK camp to that of the DMK-Congress combine.

Though there were reports about hitches in the seat-sharing talks between Congress and DMK, political observers feel that Congress high command would finally come to terms with the Dravidian party.

The Congress, which had been insisting on power-sharing, more number of seats, a common minimum programme among other things had reportedly been hurt by DMK's "unilateral" allocation of 31 seats to the PMK without taking it into confidence.

The DMDK's decision to go along with the Jayalalithaa-led AIADMK had sealed the prospects of Congress-DMDK led Third Front in the state.

On the AIADMK front, the allocation of seats to key allies like MDMK and Left parties depended on the number of seats to be given to DMDK.

Speculation is rife that the fledgling party will be getting around 45 seats.

The Congress, which had been demanding over 80 seats, had been reportedly offered by the DMK 53 seats. But with talks remaining inconclusive, it might get some more seats.

The VCK had demanded 15 seats but was likely to settle for 11 seats reportedly offered by the DMK.

Minor players like parties floated by actor Sarath Kumar and some caste-based parties like Kongu Velalar Munntera Kazhagam, which had spoiled the chances of DMK combine in eastern Tamil Nadu during Lok Sabha polls, were yet to finalise their poll strategy.

Rajathi, Kanimozhi should reveal truth about property deals: Jayalalithaa

AIADMK chief J. Jayalalithaa on Sunday asked Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi's third wife Rajathi and daughter Kanimozhi to come out with the 'real truth' about a couple of land deals in Chennai, including one referred to by corporate lobbyist Niira Radia.

In a statement issued here, Jayalalithaa said there is a limit to the coincidences as to the people figuring in the two property deals, concerning a prime property on the Anna Salai out of which Tata group's Voltas functioned, and the Windsor Estate in Kotagiri.

Involved in the deals were businessman Shanmughanathan, who bought both properties, Saravanan, who was the power of attorney-holder of the property at Anna Salai and S. Srinivasam Rathnam, whose name appeared as a witness in the sale of the Windsor Estate and has the same address in Chennai as Rajathi's auditor.

Referring to the media reports of a tapped conversation between Radia and Rajathi with Rathnam serving as interpreter, Jayalalithaa said as per the talks, Rajathi was unhappy that a property transaction promised by the Tata group had not gone through.

'The conversation specifically mentions Voltas (a Tata group company) as the occupants of the said property in Chennai,' she said, adding that according to documents on the Anna Salai deal, Saravanan sold the property, valued around Rs.350 crore, to Shanmughanathan, the director of Shangkalpam Industries Pvt Ltd, for only Rs.25 crore.

Reports had also linked Saravanan and Shanmughanathan to Rajathi, who had strongly denied it.

In a statement, Rajathi had sought to clarify that Saravanan was a former employee of her furniture showroom, Royal Enterprises but no longer employed by her, and Shanmughanathan is a businessman from Malaysia with whom she had no connection whatsoever.

Citing media reports, Jayalalithaa said the 525.98 acre Windsor Estate was purchased by Shanmughanathan on Dec 16,2006 for a mere Rs.2.47 crore.

The transaction document was witnessed by S. Srinivasa Rathnam of Chennai, she said, adding Rajathi's auditor Rathnam is actually the same S.Srinivasa Rathman who operates out of the same address in Chennai.

'Shanmughanathan's Voltas land purchase involved Rajathi's former employee Saravanan. Shanmughanathan's Windsor Estate purchase involved Rajathi's present auditor Rathnam. Windsor estate is referred to by locals as Kanimozhi Estate.'

'At least now, will Rajathi and Kanimozhi come out with the real truth?' Jayalalithaa said.

VCK will stay with DMK despite pressure to switch

Confirming that he was getting repeated feelers from the AIADMK camp, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi(VCK) leader Thol Thirumavalavan on Sunday said that despite the “heavy pressure”, he would stick with the DMK. “I'm getting strong feelers almost on a daily basis, but I am not going to leave the DMK alliance,” he told The Hindu following reports that the AIADMK had approached him for an alliance.

The VCK contested the 2006 Assembly election as part of the AIADMK alliance, but joined the DMK combine immediately after the elections. The party fielded nine candidates, but could win only two seats.

Distancing himself from reports that his party was toying with the idea of going with the AIADMK, the Dalit leader said there was no need for him to float such reports to increase the bargaining power of his party.

“But at the same time, we expect to be rewarded for our loyalty. We hope the DMK will make us feel comfortable in the alliance. We are not making any unreasonable demands,” Mr. Thirumavalavan said.

The party expects that the DMK leadership will take into consideration its strength and offer a reasonable number of seats befitting its stature, he said.

The VCK had never talked about “options” because it had always wanted to go with the DMK. Asked whether the DMK wanted to complete seat-sharing with the Congress before coming to the VCK, he said, “I have no idea.”

VCK MLA Ravikumar said his party's demands for an honourable allocation of seats was “fully justifiable.”

“Our strength is time-tested, and the VCK and PMK together can make a formidable combination in the northern belt of the State. The rival camp, whatever be the strength, cannot match us,” he said.

AIADMK finds place in 30-member JPC

The government finally agreed to a 30-member joint parliamentary committee to probe the 2G spectrum allocation scam under pressure from the non-Congress, non-BJP parties in the UPA, the NDA, and smaller parties across the spectrum. A formal motion is to be moved in the Lok Sabha on Thursday and in the Rajya Sabha after February 28.

The JPC would be led by a Lok Sabha member from the Congress party. According to sources, the panel would have 20 members from the Lok Sabha and 10 from the Rajya Sabha. The government will finalise the terms of reference of the JPC in consultation with the Leaders of the Opposition in the two Houses.

Earlier on Wednesday, AIADMK MP M. Thambidurai met Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj and NDA working chairperson L.K. Advani to request that the principal Opposition also take up its case for a 30-member JPC.

Both Mr Advani and Ms Swaraj conveyed these sentiments to the government and suggested that a bigger JPC be formed. “Even parliamentary standing committees, which are considered mini-JPCs, have 30 members. Moreover, the earlier three JPCs on corruption have had 30 members,” Ms Swaraj told reporters.

The Congress will have 11 members (eight from the Lok Sabha and three from the Rajya Sabha), the BJP six (three from the LS, two from the RS, leaving one member to ally Shiv Sena), the JD-U two, Left two, the DMK two, BSP two, and the Samajwadi Party, Trinamul Congress, Biju Janata Dal, NCP and AIADMK one member each in the JPC, sources said.

The time given for the committee to submit its report could be till the last day of this year’s monsoon session of Parliament. This will be the first JPC to be constituted after the Congress-led UPA came to power in 2004. Among likely members are Sitaram Yechury (CPI-M), M. Thambidurai (AIADMK), T.R. Baalu and Tiruchy Siva (both DMK), and Arjun Charan Sethi (BJD). The talk in political circles is that ministerial hopefuls are dreading becoming members of the JPC at a time when the PM has announced that he will reconstitute his ministry after the Budget Session of Parliament.

DMK strikes poll deal with PMK, gives 31 seats

Ending a month-long uncertainty, the DMK and PMK on Friday clinched an alliance for the coming Tamil Nadu Assembly polls under which the ruling party's junior partner has been allotted 31 Assembly seats. The deal was finalized at a meeting between Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunani
dhi and PMK founder Dr S Ramadoss here on a day when the DMK first family-owned Kalaignar TV was raided by CBI over the 2G spectrum allocation scam.

Karunanidhi, announcing the accord at the end of the nearly 90 minute meeting with his former ally said the two parties had decided to fight the elections jointly.

A beaming Ramadoss said his party had been allotted 31 seats and also a Rajya Sabha seat.

He exuded confidence that the DMK-led alliance which also has Congress in it, would "sweep" the polls.

The poll-talks between the DMK and PMK had come to an abrupt end with Congress President Sonia Gandhi reportedly expressing her reservations over the presence of Ramdoss-led party in the alliance during her recent meeting with Karunanidhi in New Delhi.

As a damage control excercise, former Union Health Minister and Ramadoss' son, Dr R Anbumani, called on Gandhi at Delhi yesterday when she reportedly gave her nod for admitting PMK into the DMK-Congress combine.

The PMK, known for changing sides during every elections, had contested 31 seats in the 2006 Assembly polls in alliance with the DMK and won 18 of them.

The DMK snapped its ties with the PMK in 2008 after Ramadoss gave "zero marks" to DMK for governance. In 2009 Lok Sabha polls, PMK contested seven seats in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry from the AIADMK-led platform but drew a blank.

Besides, the two parties bitterly fought the Pennagaram by-polls last year in which the DMK won and PMK came second.

The party will be the third largest constituent in the DMK-Congress combine.

Meanwhile, the Congress is yet to officially intitiate poll talks with the DMK though it has repeatedly asserted that the alliance between the two parties is firm.

TNCC president K V Thangkabalu, after meeting Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, also in-charge of party's Tamil Nadu affairs, had announced that they would initiate talks by the week-end.

Unseat Karunanidhi in his own constituency, Jayalalithaa tells cadres

AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa on Monday called upon her party cadres “to create a new history” by ensuring the defeat of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi in his own constituency in the Assembly election.

“Mr. Karunanidhi has been saying he has never lost an election. He must face defeat this time. He must bite the dust. It will be a permanent victory for the AIADMK and there will be no fall for us,” she said presiding over 63 marriages organised by Jayalalithaa Peravai in Chennai as part of her 63rd birthday celebrations.

Golden period

Stating that the AIADMK and Tamil Nadu were on the verge of entering a golden period, she said if Mr. Karunanidhi was defeated in the elections, the darkness engulfing Tamil Nadu would disappear.

Ms. Jayalalithaa said corruption, hoarding and smuggling had become rampant in the country and everyday there was news about how one family had enriched itself.

“Even before we could understand the gravity of the Rs. 1.76 lakh crore 2 G spectrum scam, a scam to the tune of Rs. 2 lakh crore has unfolded. One party has made use of one ministry and made such a huge money. This money had been stashed away in foreign banks in the name of one family,” she added.

Ms. Jayalalithaa said the country would have been benefitted if the money was used for opening schools and hospitals and for the development of industry and agriculture.

Stressing that Tamil Nadu could be saved from the “evil forces” only by establishing MGR rule, she said the AIADMK had the responsibility and duty to save the country.

Prepare for sacrifice

“We should destroy the evil force in Tamil Nadu and the victory will save the country because Tamil Nadu is the birth place of that evil force,” she said.

Ms. Jayalalithaa said the AIADMK, committed to the ideals of honesty, dharma and patriotism, could certainly challenge misuse of power by the “evil force” and its “money power and muscle power.” She also called upon the cadres to prepare themselves for any sacrifice to defeat the designs of the “evil force.”

“Everyone in Tamil Nadu should cooperate for releasing the State from the clutches of the evil force,” she said.

Gifts to couples

Ms. Jayalalithaa also gave 63 types of gifts (seethanam) to the newly wed couples.

Jayalalithaa Peravai secretary Nainar Nagendran and Party MP N. Balaganga were present.

Raja in CBI custody for two more days; not giving 'useful info'

Former Telecom Minister A. Raja was today remanded to two more days of CBI custody by a court here for further interrogation after the agency submitted that he was not divulging any 'useful information' regarding his role in the 2G scam.

Special Judge O P Saini also sent former Telecom Secretary Siddartha Behura and Raja's former Personal Secretary R.K. Chandolia to Tihar Jail under judicial custody as the agency said it no longer needs them in its custody.

Raja will remain in CBI custody till February 10.

The trio, arrested by the agency on February 2 for their alleged role in the 2G spectrum allocation scam, involving a loss of Rs 22,000 crore to the public exchequer as per the CVC estimates, were produced before the Special Judge following expiry of their five-day custody with the CBI.

After producing the trio before the court, the CBI sought four more days of custody to interrogate Raja saying that he was 'not divulging any useful and crucial information' about his role in 2G spectrum scam.

"Some more documents are to be recovered and accused A. Raja is to be confronted with them," senior CBI prosecutor Akhilesh submitted.

Refuting allegations by Raja's counsel Ramesh Gupta that the agency had not disclosed to the court the outcome of the probe conducted so far in this case, Akhilesh said, "The case diary has already been submitted to the court. Each and everything cannot be disclosed in the open courtroom."

Opposing CBI's demand for four more days of Raja's custody, Gupta said, "I am not having the custody of any document, which the CBI wants to recover from me."

"Whatever documents were there, they have already been seized by them in 2009 itself," he added.

About Behura and Chandolia, the CBI counsel said the agency no longer needs their custody.

"The two can be sent to Tihar Jail under judicial custody," he said.

Karunanidhi involved in 2G scam, Swamy tells CBI court

A Delhi court on Saturday issued notice to the CBI, asking it to file a detailed report on whether its probe in the 2G spectrum case covers the aspect of national security as raised by Janta Party chief Subramanian Swamy in his private complaint seeking prosecution of former telecom minister A Raja.

"Issue notice to the CBI to file its detailed report of the investigation being carried out by it and whether it covers the aspect of national security as raised by Subramanian Swamy in the present case," special CBI judge Pradeep Chaddah said.

During the hearing, the court queried if they can still proceed in the case before it in the wake of Raja's arrest by the CBI.

Seeking CBI's response in the matter, the court posted the hearing for February 23.

"I am of the opinion that this court should not proceed for the time being with this matter", the judge said while issuing notice to the CBI.

Swamy, meanwhile, submitted before the court that he is intending to move an application to implead some other persons, including Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi, as accused in this complaint.

Comptroller and Auditor General Vinod Rai, who had been summoned by the court to appear as witnesses on Swamy's complaint, has filed a certified copy of the entire report concerning this matter through his advocate Sandeep Sethi.

The special CBI judge had on January 22 sought presence of Rai and Director CAG R P Singh in the court on Saturday to depose as witnesses on the complaint by Swamy seeking registration of a criminal case against Raja for his alleged role in the scam, which, according to the CAG, caused a presumptive loss of 1.76 lakh crore to the exchequer.

The court had on January 7 held as "maintainable" the private complaint filed by Swamy on December 15 last year.

He had made a three-fold prayer which included that his complaint be taken cognizance of and Raja be summoned to take the case to its logical conclusion.

As per the second prayer, Swamy wanted the court to appoint him "as a deemed public prosecutor under the provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act."

Swamy also wanted the court's directions to agencies like the CBI and Enforcement Directorate (ED) to assist him in conducting prosecution and in the further investigation into the scam.

Quoting from the CAG report, Swamy had alleged that Raja committed fraud by adopting the first-come-first-served basis in allocating Spectrum to ineligible companies.

Govt has made itself a 'laughing stock': Jayalalithaa

In Tamil Nadu, the political aftershocks of A Raja's arrest have been co-opted quickly into the campaign agenda of the Opposition. The state votes in three months.

In Chennai today, AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa said the arrest of the former Telecom Minister has convinced her that the government has "turned itself into a laughing stock by contradicting itself several times over."

Ms Jayalalithaa said that first, the government's auditor declared Mr Raja guilty of costing the country upto 1.76 lakh crores through his deliberate mishandling of the allocation of spectrum for mobile networks. Despite this, she said, new Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal said that 2G licenses had caused no losses to the government.

Now, the CBI, which also reports to the Centre, Ms Jayalithaa alleges, has proved that financial crimes were committed by arresting Mr Raja.

Mr Raja was arrested along with two of his former aides on Wednesday in Delhi for his alleged role in the spectrum scam. The Supreme Court is monitoring the CBI's investigation to unravel how the scam - described as India's largest - was planned and executed.

"The arrest is meant to hoodwink the public and seems to have been taken just to tell the Supreme Court that some action is being taken against Raja because a few months ago, the supreme Court had asked why no action had been taken." (Read: Jayalalithaa's entire statement on Raja arrest)

Ms Jayalalithaa said that her party will continue to insist that a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) be set up to investigate the scam. Different opposition parties united in their demand for a JPC in November and since then, Parliament has been paralyzed, with the government refusing to sanction a JPC.

Karunanidhi to discuss seat-sharing with Sonia, PM

The countdown to the elections in Tamil Nadu has begun. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam (DMK) chief M Karunanidhi arrived with his daughter Kanimozhi and a few cabinet colleagues in Delhi on Sunday on a three-day visit to discuss seat-sharing with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi.

After the sacking of Telecom Minister and DMK leader A Raja, the relation between the two parties were a little strained. Even during the Cabinet reshuffle, the Congress didn't give the Telecom portfolio back to the DMK. However, both the parties have maintained that there is no trouble between them and the alliance is intact.

The state assembly elections are slated for May in Tamil Nadu.

The Congress got 48 seats during the 2006 assembly polls in Tamil Nadu. Now, the party is expected to demand more including share in power if the DMK is voted back to power.

The DMK chief on Sunday also confirmed that the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), will be a part of the DMK led alliance for the forthcoming elections.

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister will also raise the issue of the two Indian fishermen who were allegedly killed by Sri Lankan Navy, with the Prime Minister and ask him to tell Colombo not to resort to firing. (Read: Karunanidhi to take up killing of fishermen with PM)

PM is weak and ineffective, says Jaya

Targeting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the issue of continued attacks on Tamil Nadu fishermen allegedly by Sri Lankan Navy, AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa on Wednesday described him as "weak and ineffective" and asked him to quit if "doesn't know what to do".

After meeting the family members of a fisherman who was brutally killed in the latest attack off Kodiakarai coast in the district, Jayalalithaa said, "the Indian government is weak. The Prime Minister is weak and ineffective."

Since the prime minister was "ineffective", the Sri Lankan Navy had the audacity to kill Indian fishermen, she alleged.

"India is one among the biggest nations in the world with a mighty Armed Force. But, the tiny Sri Lanka is playing with the lives of Indian fishermen. This is happening only because the Central government is very weak," she told reporters outside the house of N Jayakumar, who was allegedly dragged into sea waters with a rope tied to his neck resulting in his death last week.

Jayalalithaa described as "illegal" the ceding of Katchatheevu, an islet, to Sri Lanka in 1974 by India by way of a pact saying it was not ratified by the Parliament.

Retrieval of Katchatheevu was the only solution to end the sufferings of Tamil Nadu fishermen, she said.

Jayalalithaa accused the DMK government of not showing any interest in safeguarding the lives of the fishermen. "The DMK is interested only in the welfare of a single family. Law and order is deteriorating in the state and people feel very insecure," she claimed.

Earlier, Jayalalithaa, who arrived at Vedaranyam by a helicopter, reached the Pushpanavam village by road.

She comforted the fisherman's family members and presented a cash relief of Rs one lakh to his wife Murugeswari, assuring all help, including assistance for the education of her two girl children.

She also visited the houses of the two injured fishermen and enquired about their health.

Two fishermen from the state were killed allegedly by the Sri Lankan navy in a span of 10 days following which India lodged a strong protest with the island nation and sought strong action to end such incidents.

Sri Lanka has denied its Navy was involved in the attacks.

TN Assembly polls: CPI-M to align with AIADMK

CPI-M today formally decided to forge an alliance with AIADMK to fight coming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, saying the need of the hour was to bring all secular and left democratic forces under one umbrella to defeat the DMK-Congress combine. The decision was taken on the concluding day of the two-day meet here of the party's Tamil Nadu state committee meeting, which was also attended by CPI-M General Secretary Prakash Karat. A resolution adopted at the meeting alleged that the family of Chief Minister M Karunanidhi had "spread like octopus" in all spheres including politics, media and film world and only the defeat of the DMK at the hustings could save the state. In order to defeat the DMK-Congress combine and BJP, the need of the hour was to bring all secular and left democratic forces under one umbrella, it said. The meeting constituted a three-member committee headed by the state Secretary G Ramakrishnan for holding seat sharing talks with the AIADMK for the polls, due in May. The CPI-M had contested the 2009 Lok Sabha elections as part of the AIADMK-led front.

India has failed to protect fishermen from TN: Pandian

CPI state secretary D Pandian on Monday came down heavily on the central and state governments for failing to protect Indian fishermen from attacks by the Sri Lankan Navy.

Talking to mediapersons here, Pandian said it was a matter of shame for the entire nation that fishermen were continuously being gunned down by Sri Lankan forces without any valid reason. "While we often hear success stories about Indian forces who capture sea pirates in the Somalin Coast situated several miles away from India, we are unable to protect our fishermen who venture into the Rameswaram waters, just a few miles away from the coast. The government is making a clean surrender before the Sri Lankan forces," he alleged.

When asked about the forthcoming elections, he said his party would do its best to bring all opposition forces together, barring the BJP, to defeat the 'corrupt' DMK regime. "There will be more clarity by February 20. The alliance formed by AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa for the last Lok Sabha election still remains strong and vibrant and the focus is now on strengthening it further by inducting other democratic forces," he said. According to him, the seat-sharing talks among alliance partners in the AIADMK front would start after February 20.

Meanwhile, another AIADMK ally, the CPM, will organise a two-day state committee meeting on Monday in Chennai to discuss poll alliance.

Join Jaya, defeat DMK, Cho tells Captain

Political commentator and editor of the Tamil weekly Thuglak Cho Ramaswamy has asked Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) leader Vijayakanth to ally with the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) to put an end to corrupt rule of DMK in the State.

Addressing the gathering at the 41st anniversary meeting of the Thuglak Magazine here on Friday, Cho Ramaswamy said the AIADMK has more support than the DMK among the people. But it would be good for the AIADMK to have a strong alliance to fight the DMK in the forthcoming Assembly elections.

In this context, Cho said that Vijayakanth, who had faced enough problems from the DMK government, should do away with his stance to contest the elections independently.

“Vijayakanth’s stand of fighting independently will not yield any desirable result, so it is high-time he joined the AIADMK front to get rid of the DMK,” suggested Cho.

Earlier, responding to questions from the audience, Cho strongly remarked that AIADMK leader J Jayalalithaa was one leader in Tamil Nadu, who could bring about a change in the State, and urged the people to vote for her.

Acclaimed writer S Gurumurthy earlier spoke about the spectrum scam during the event.

Seeman to contest against MK in Assembly polls

Naam Thamizhar Iyakkam founder president and Tamil film director Seeman on Monday announced that he would contest against DMK chief and Chief Minister M Karunanidhi in the coming Assembly elections.

Seeman, who was released from Vellore Central Prison after the Madras High Court quashed his preventive detention under the National Security Act (NSA) recently, spoke to the media after calling on MDMK chief Vaiko here on Monday.

Asked whether he would campaign for the AIADMK in the forthcoming Assembly polls, he said his party would be aiming for the defeat of DMK-Congress combine and AIADMK is the party that can challenge this alliance. He said his party would support the AIADMK in the elections.

When asked about his meeting with Vaiko, Seeman, who charged that the State government misused NSA and booked him under the Act twice, said he wanted to thank the Vaiko for his support.

Vaiko and Sri Lankan Tamils Protection Movement convenor Nedumaran had called on Seeman while he was in Vellore prison.

The idea of fielding Seeman as a common Opposition candidate against Karunanidhi was tossed up publicly for the first time on Sunday at the launch of a book, What should be done for this?, by Tamilaruvimanian, a speaker at the event. Several Eelam supporters like Tamil nationalists movement leader Nedumaran and film personalities Seeman, Nassar and Manivanan spoke at the function in which the book, which has a collection of 300 photographs related to the genocide in Sri Lanka, was released.

MDMK was represented by party deputy general secretary Mallai Sathya and the PMK had send Velusamy MLA for the event. Speaker after speaker said that their prime aim was to defeat the Congress-DMK alliance in the elections.

The PMK was snubbed by one of the speakers, who said Tamil nationalistic fervour could not be nurtured by being with Sonia Gandhi and with Tamil lovers at the same time.

The meeting also touched upon the subject of organising protests against the conduct of the cricket world cup as the Sri Lankan team was part of it.

Despite DMK snub, PM says alliance is strong

Hours after DMK chief M Karunanidhi chose not to receive him at the airport in Chennai, the Congress party's alliance with the DMK is "as strong as ever" said the Prime Minister today.

Dr Manmohan Singh was in Chennai to inaugurate the 98th Science Congress this morning. Before that, he did meet Mr Karunanidhi at the city's Raj Bhawan. This was their first meeting since DMK leader A Raja was forced to resign as Telecom Minister in November because of massive corruption charges in the 2G spectrum scam.

Mr Raja is seen to be a favourite of the DMK leader. Raids in connection with the 2G scam have included Mr Raja's homes and offices, as well as the offices of some close associates of the DMK in Chennai, including senior journalists and a non-profit organization that enjoys the patronage of Mr Karunanidhi's daughter, Kanimozhi, who is also a Rajya Sabha MP. Through this, the DMK has said that its relationship with the Congress - with whose support it is in power in Tamil Nadu - remains strong. The DMK also defended Mr Raja at a series of public rallies in December.

Last night, Mr Karunanidhi skipped both the airport and a scheduled one-on-one meeting, opting instead to attend a poetry function. This morning, he was unruffled about that missed appointment.

"(The relationship) It is as strong as the ties between you (media) and me," he told reporters after meeting Dr Singh.

Mr Karunanidhi's perceived snub to the PM is being reported as payback for the last-minute glitch that the DMK has seen, courtesy the union government, for its pet project - the Adyar Eco Park. The Environment ministry in Delhi has delayed its approval for the park. The PM was meant to inaugurate the eco park this morning, but last week, his office conveyed this would not be possible.
